How Nick Arbogast Weekends in Flagstaff: Canyons, Craters & Camera Rolls

Time for an adventure!

There's something about Northern Arizona that feels like a creative reset button. The light hits differently out here, the landscapes look like they belong in another world, and every weekend has the potential to be its own road trip. For me, it's about finding beauty in the extremes - wide skies, volcanic caves, rushing falls and capturing it all through the lens.
I try to wrap up work early on Fridays and hit the road north. There's no better way to kick off the weekend than catching golden hour at the Grand Canyon. I usually aim to arrive about 90 minutes before sunset - just enough time to walk the South Rim, pick a spot, and watch the colors deepen into that rich, glowing orange. The quiet hite different out there. It's grounding. And it never fails to inspire whatever creative project I'm working on next.

Easy Saturday Morning

Saturday mornings start slow I'11 grab breakfast and
a strong coffee from Galaxy Diner and map out my route for the day.

The first stop is the Lava River Cave, just west of town. It's a mile-long underground tunnel formed by flowing lava dark, damp, and completely surreal. I always bring a headlamp, extra layers, and a wide-angle lens. The textures in there are unreal, and when the light hits just right, you get these dramatic shadows that are perfect for photography.

Canyon & Trails

Next, I head over to Walnut Canyon. The loop trail isn't long, but it's full of these carved-out cliff dwellings that make you stop and stare. It's one of those places where history feels tangible like you're walking through a story that's still being told.

I keep lunch casual at Taverna, a modern Mediterranean spot known for its fresh, flavorful dishes and inviting atmosphere. Afterward, I settle in for a light editing session with some of the shots I grabbed that morning.

My new dinner obsession, Northern Pines Restaurant. Saturdays now call for something wars and flavorful - either the Cajun Alfredo Pasta or the Blackened Salmon topped with fresh mango sales. If there's any energy left after, maybe a quick night stroll through downtown to wrap up the day.

Sunday Chase: Hidden Beauty

Sundays are for chasing hidden beauty. I'll get up early and head toward Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument. The landscape is so dramatic black volcanic fields, jagged rock, and these bright green pines pushing up through the ash. It's one of those places where you can shoot an entire roll of photos without moving more than twenty feet.

Later, I'll grab dinner at Gloria's Bakery, a hidden gem on 4th Street known for the most authentic Mexican food and freshly baked sweet bread. After dinner, I'll take a (walk downtown to check out some local shops and art galleries, my current favorite one being The HeArt Box.

My Local Secret

If you're in Flagstaff between late September and mid-October, don't miss Lockett Meadow. This serene spot transforms into a golden haven as aspen trees light up the landscape.
The Inner Basin Trail, starting from the meadow, offers a moderate hike through these vibrant groves, providing breathtaking views of the San Francisco Peaks. It's a favorite among locals for its stunning fall colors and peaceful ambiance.
